The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most celebrated and iconic long-distance treks in the world, winding through the breathtaking landscapes of the Annapurna Conservation Area in Nepal. This 15-day adventure begins and ends in Kathmandu, taking trekkers on a sweeping journey through diverse terrain — from subtropical river valleys and terraced farmlands to high alpine meadows and the stark, wind-swept plateau reminiscent of the Tibetan highlands. Starting from Besishahar and ascending along the Marshyangdi River, trekkers are rewarded with dramatic vistas of Mount Manaslu (8,163m) and Mount Himal Chuli (7,893m) in the east. The route passes through villages inhabited by people of diverse ethnic backgrounds including Gurung, Thakali, and Tibetan communities, offering rich cultural encounters along the way. The undisputed highlight of the circuit is crossing Thorung La Pass at 5,416 meters — one of the highest trekking passes in the world. The route is typically walked counter-clockwise, from east to west, making the ascent more gradual and manageable. Descending from the pass leads to the sacred Muktinath Temple, a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. From Muktinath, the trail continues through the ancient walled village of Kagbeni and down the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge — the world's deepest gorge, flanked by Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and the Annapurna massif. Trekkers also pass through Jomsom, the administrative hub of Mustang district, before the journey concludes in Pokhara and then Kathmandu. Along the way, highlights include panoramic views of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, and Lamjung Himal; relaxing hot springs at Tatopani; lush rhododendron forests in spring; and the unique opportunity to experience both the wet southern slopes and the arid rain-shadow landscapes of the Mustang region. The trek is graded moderate and suits trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and some prior hiking experience.

The Annapurna Circuit passes through villages of diverse ethnic communities including Gurung, Thakali, Manangi, and Tibetan-origin peoples. Muktinath is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists — visitors should dress modestly and be respectful within temple grounds. It is customary to walk clockwise around religious monuments such as stupas and mani walls. Trekkers should ask permission before photographing locals. Tipping guides and porters, while not mandatory, is greatly appreciated and considered culturally appropriate as it forms a meaningful part of their income.
